Blazers are a formal jacket which is tailored with solid colored fabrics, often having metal naval buttons reflecting heritage of British Navy worn in dark blue with fold over pockets.
Worn by boating club members in 1825 made of a fire bright red color which is where the formal jackets obtained name which stuck around long after other colors and fabrics were used in the tailoring.
Compared to a sports coat which is not formal therefore does not require matching pants. Not being formal alots freedom of patterns, designs and different fabrics for example corduroy, denim, tweed or suede.
Easy to confuse blazers and sports coats (also called jacket) because both were worn during the playing of certain sports and both are worn as school uniforms all around the world.
Types of sports coats are:
1. a shooting jacket used during target practice or hunting with leather pocket (and matching elbows) to prevent distress on fabric when gun recoils.
2.Worn during horseback riding the hacking jacket made of wool with 3 buttons commonly tweed is the other common sports coat.
In modern day Congressional Cup Regatta Race held in Long Beach the trophy or prize is a red blazer while the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta Georgia awards a green formal jacket to winner of golf tournament.
